Flower Inspiration - Blue bouquets

I have had a lot of interest in blue flowers for weddings this year, and as blue is not seen all that often in bouquets (other than the odd thistle) I thought I would do a little post about blue as a wedding colour. I'm talking about true blue here, as purple flowers are sometimes referred to as "blue".

Of course it depends on the season, spring brings beautiful blue muscari and hyacinths which both have a gorgeous scent. These are gorgeous on their own in a simple bunch tied with rafia or mixed with other spring flowers.
In summer there are many more blue flowers available than in other seasons - agapanthus and strikingly bright blue cornflowers, tall delphinium, hydrangea - which comes in a multitude of blue shades, nigella or love in a mist which sounds so romantic, and pretty pale blue scabious.

Hydrangea make a bold statement flower used alone and cornflowers, nigella and scabious are reminiscent of country gardens full of wild flowers. I love little jam jars or miniature vases filled with groups of these flowers - simple yet effective and oh so colourful!

Autumn is a season of beautiful autumn colours (as you might expect!). Reds, oranges and yellows are king here before they bow to winter whites but there are a few blue flowers still around. Autumn is a good time for echinops and there may still be a chance to get gentian, which appears later in summer and early autumn.

Echinops or globe thistle

In winter there is only one flower worth mentioning - the anemone. This is one of my absolute favorite flowers and comes in that gorgeous navy, midnight, deep deep blue that you can just fall into. More people really should get married in winter and early spring so that they can have anemones because they are just too lovely for words!

Don't worry if you haven't set a date for your blue wedding yet, there are lots of blue flowers available all year - to name a few, delphinium, eryngium or sea holly (thistle), iris, and hydrangea are available most of the year now although they will always be less expensive when in season.

Three special weddings - Part III

Hello lovelies,

Here is the last in the little series of three that my wonderful friends Cara and Nye of Lillian and Leonard Photography helped me out with.* I brought flowers and they brought cameras, and we all worked our respective magic for the lovely couple Lynne and Stuart who were getting married. Lynne and Stuart chose House for an Art Lover in Glasgow for their wedding, which is a gorgeous venue. It was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and has all the beautiful details, quirky lights and painted wood you would imagine.

Lynne and Stuart wanted simple, elegant flowers with lots of nice greenery, so we kept the coulours minimal - just green and white. I used brassicas with green hypericum berries, white lisianthus and ivy, dracena, and two varieties of eucalyptus. Each arrangement sat in a sweet little glass cake dish in the centre of each table. I also made sure that each arrangement was a little bit different from the next to give a more natural look. I like to think that each one was unique, instead of all being identical.

You can see more images of their beautiful wedding on Lillian and Leonard's blog soon. I have some more lovely pictures to share with you next week, there will be a blue and white countryside wedding full of peonies and delphniums, an intimate, modern wedding with a red, white and mango theme and a fabulous shimmering bouquet for a shimmering bride. Also coming soon - my new website!**

* Actually they have taken four lots of pictures of my work now, as they kindly took some pictures at another wedding in House for an Art Lover last week.

** I'm pretty excited about replacing the current website, however the new one is a work in progress, and will change as I improve it until its just right.

Summer pastel wedding bouquet in pink, blue, white and lemon

Wednesday, July 4, 2012 · Posted in , , , , , ,

I thought I'd take the oportunity today to share some pictures of flowers I did for a wedding a couple of weeks ago at the beginning of June. The wedding was at the beautiful Kippilaw House in Melrose in the Scottish borders, and the couple wanted a summery pastel theme for the flowers. I included white roses - a flower which had featured heavily in their relationship since they met, along with gorgeous scabious, pastel pink sweet peas, lemon alstromeria, gypsophilla and mixed freesia. The bouquet also had a lush green trail of ivy and soft ruscus.
I hope I can put up more pictures soon - its been a busy few weeks and a busy few weeks are ahead, plus I'm waiting to get some professional shots back from photographers that are WAY better than mine!

Flowers Vision

Monday, June 25, 2012 · Posted in , ,

Its back. I wasn't sure if it would be but its definitely here....I'm only talking about flower-vision! Thats my silly made up name for when I can't sleep, eat or do really anything without having flowers on the brain. I've been planning, creating, imagining, colour co-ordinating, researching....
Flower-vision looks a bit like the picture, except the flowers I see are in a million different beautiful colours. Thank you, my lovely brides and lovely grooms, your summer weddings have brought back my flower-vision.
