Spring Sunday

Hello lovelies,

I hope you're all having a nice lazy Sunday. I just thought I'd share a little spring love with you today while I sip my chai (which, by the way I am officially addicted to). I've been gathering photos of some of the hand ties I've made in the run up to mothers day and I had to show you this one because its my favorite. You're about to read about some seriously sweet romance too - guys take note, girls like this sort of thing!

This was a lovely seasonal bouquet I made for one of my friends (R) just before Valentines day this year. It was all organised by her boyfriend E, not as a Valentines gift but as a surprise anniversary present as they got together just before the 14th. We even went to the flower market together so he could help choose the flowers he wanted to give to her. We ended up picking a lovely selection of spring flowers - tulips, miniature narcissi and iris (I know you can get iris all year round but I still think of them as spring flowers) along with some big pink aqua roses, purple edged lisianthus, button chrysanths, and my favorite bit - apple blossom!

It was all done with much sneaking around as E had to pretend to go to the gym early in the morning while we raced off to the flower market. Thankfully though she was none the wiser and the flowers were a complete surprise to R when she came home from work.
I hope you are all enjoying the spring as much as I am. I'm still reveling in the blossoms, and lusting after all the wonderful bulbs and plants. Its a good job I don't have a garden right now as I would end up spending all my pennies on bulbs and seeds! Those of you with gardens get out there and enjoy them for me today, I'm going to go for a walk in the sunshine and dream about having a garden of my own.

Flower Inspiration, Rose Bouquets

Roses are such a popular choice when choosing any kind of flowers, but are particularly popular for weddings. There is something pleasing about the rose's simple charms - it's spiral of petals which draws the eye into its centre, its soft shape, or the many beautiful colours and shades available. Roses have become a tradition, and maybe a staple of wedding flowers, and while they are lovely, classic, elegant and all the rest of it....I'm starting to get a little bored with them.

Now some of you will probably be outraged, how can I be bored with such a lovely flower? How?! Why?! Well lets set things straight. I've got nothing against roses, I like them plenty! All I'm saying is lets get a bit more imaginative when it comes to using roses for a wedding bouquet.

There are loads of gorgeous varieties of rose just begging to be made into a beautiful bouquet! Why not step away from the standard tight headed varieties and go for something more open? Using a garden rose from David Austin or The Real Flower Company can give you a very romantic and soft, blousy look, and can be lovely when mixed with seasonal berries, leaves or summer flowers. Or how about a frilly rose like the large headed King Arthur, Supergreen or smaller El Torro varieties.

Go wild with colour and choose something variegated or bright. Mix it with your favorite classic rose to uplift a traditional look, or pick a selection of other bold flowers to make your bouquet really pop with colour.

There are also a number of beautiful and unusual rose varieties on the market such as the striking Purple Tiger, the lovely variegated Ranuncula, and its cousin the unsurprisingly named Green Eye, all of which would make a beautifully quirky bouquet used alone, or could add character when used along more standard style roses.

So lets mix it up! There are so many other varieties out there other than aqua and akito - lets use them with wild abandon!

Leigh and James Beautiful Black and White Edinburgh Wedding

Leigh and James had a gorgeously simple colour scheme for their wedding. Just black and white.

Now I'm a girl who loves colour - I can get lost thinking about a thousand summery shades of pink, blue and purple - but it was really refreshing to do some flowers that were just black and white. Simple and beautiful. Plus, you know how much of an anemone obsession I have (not to mention ranunculus) so I was super happy when Leigh said she wanted to have both.

We used white ostrich feathers and pinned Leigh's grandmothers brooch to the handle of the bouquet to give it a little bit of vintage glamour. Leigh and James got married in the Rowantree in Edinburgh, for those not acquainted with it, its a wonderfully atmospheric space with lots of exposed stone and candles, so it was nice to keep the flowers very simple.

Making James' buttonhole made me fall in love with buttonholes all over again - I used white ranunculus, broom and eucalyptus for a really natural feel. And we decorated the lovely cake with more anemones, ranunculus and broom. I will confess, it was hard to resist taking a bit out of the back and covering it with a strategically placed flower....

I have so much more pretty to show you very soon my lovelies, I'm going to try and get blogging more regularly as once a month just won't do! Xx

PS. All the photographs were taken by the immensely talented Lillian and Leonard.
They are pretty amazing, and if you are reading this from London, you need to *go hire them right away*. Its pretty great getting to work with your besties on lovely weddings like this one.

Romantic Red at Glasgow Art Club

Morning lovelies! I realise that some of you may have seen this wedding already over on the wonderful Love My Dress, but I thought it was high time I shared it with you anyway! This was the last wedding of 2012, both for me and Lillian and Leonard who shot the whole gorgeous caboodle. Finishing the year off by delivering flowers to Glasgow Art Club couldn't have been nicer - for those not acquainted with the Art Club, its a lovely private art gallery housed in one of the gorgeous old town houses on Bath Street. The walls are covered in carefully collected paintings, from local artists work to some quite famous stuff too. As you can see from the photos, the interior is beautiful!

Amy had chosen a mix of gorgeous red flowers - roses, amaryllis and ranunculus for her own bouquet, and roses, ranunculus, anemones and skimmia for her bridesmaids. We tied all the bouquets with big bows of lush, wide velvet ribbon. The buttonholes were simple - delicious, open red roses. If you'd like to see more.

I've got so much more to tell you about over the next wee while, I've been busy like a bee preparing for some of the most amazing weddings and I can't wait to show you what I've been up to very soon!
